Inside each of us lives a child: the child who was once happy, played, was afraid, went unseen or was hurt. This child has not grown up and left; they are still present in our reactions, fears and needs. Making peace with the inner child means seeing them, hearing their voice and giving them the love they once lacked.
Signs of a wounded inner child
- Strong fear of rejection or being left alone
- A constant need for others’ approval
- Sudden anger out of proportion to the situation
- Being too hard on yourself and perfectionism
- Difficulty playing, enjoying and resting without a reason
Reiki and the inner child
Reiki, a complementary practice, creates a safe and kind space in which old feelings can rise without judgement. In Holy Fire® cleansings, many seekers re-experience images and feelings from childhood, this time not with fear but in the presence of light and calm. One of our seekers wrote: “With this meditation I returned to myself, after my childhood, and held myself in my arms.”
Practice: a letter to your inner child
- Find a photo of yourself as a child and look at it for a few minutes
- Place your hands on your heart and take a few deep breaths
- Write a short letter to that child: what did they need to hear and never heard?
- Read that sentence aloud to them, kindly
- If you are attuned to Reiki, let Reiki flow for a few minutes with the intention of healing your inner child
Forgiveness, not forgetting
Making peace with the inner child does not mean denying the pain of the past. It means no longer letting that pain lead us today. On this path, forgiving ourselves and others happens gradually and naturally.
