“Chakra” is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel”. In Eastern traditions the chakras are spinning centres of energy along the spine, each linked to a part of the body, our emotions and our awareness. When the chakras are balanced, energy flows freely and we feel vitality and calm.
Working with the chakras, like Reiki, is a complementary practice that supports the harmony of body and mind alongside a healthy lifestyle and medicine.
The seven main chakras
- Root chakra, base of the spine, red: safety, stability and rootedness; stone: garnet
- Sacral chakra, below the navel, orange: emotions, creativity and pleasure; stone: orange agate (carnelian)
- Solar plexus chakra, above the navel, yellow: personal power, self-confidence and will; stone: yellow agate
- Heart chakra, centre of the chest, green and pink: love, forgiveness and compassion; stone: rose quartz and jade
- Throat chakra, light blue: expression, communication and truthfulness; stone: turquoise
- Third-eye chakra, between the eyebrows, indigo: intuition, insight and clarity; stone: lapis lazuli
- Crown chakra, top of the head, violet: connection with existence and higher awareness; stone: amethyst
Signs of imbalance
Constant fear and insecurity can point to a weak root chakra; being unable to say what is in your heart relates to the throat chakra; a heart closed to love relates to the heart chakra. Recognising these signs is the starting point of self-knowledge.
Ways to balance the chakras
- Giving yourself Reiki with your hands on each chakra
- Meditating with the colour and breath of each chakra
- Carrying or placing the related stone during meditation
- Paying attention to the feelings that rise as you work with each chakra
